No matter who you are or how much money you have, it can be tough getting a full night’s sleep when you have kids. Mark Zuckerberg hopes to alleviate late night and early morning stress for his wife Priscilla by inventing what he’s referring to as a “sleep box.”
Zuckerberg designed the sleep box because his wife finds it difficult sleeping through the night due to worrying about their kids. Zuck says that Priscilla’s sleep is often interrupted when she wakes up and checks her watch to see if it is nearing time for the children to wake up. Like a lot of us, Priscilla finds it hard to get back to sleep once she’s awake, and this is where the sleep box comes into play.
Zuckerberg’s sleep box emits a faint light every day between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. While the light is visible enough to see, it’s not bright enough to wake his wife while she’s sleeping. When Priscilla sees the light, she knows it’s okay to wake the kids. Conversely, the box doesn’t show the time, so if she wakes up in the middle of the night and doesn’t see the light, she knows she can go back to sleep without worry.
“As an engineer, building a device to help my partner sleep better is one of the best ways I can think of to express my love and gratitude,” Zuckerberg says of his sleep box. “A bunch of my friends have told me they’d want something like this, so I’m putting this out there in case another entrepreneur wants to run with this and build sleep boxes for more people!”
